EmpowerHer Tomorrow is the recipient organization of the $50,000 loss and damage grant to implement the loss and damage project in Katesh and Gendabi villages in Tanzania. 

EmpowerHer Tomorrow was awarded a $50,000 grant to implement their proposed loss and damage project. The grant was part of the 2nd cycle of the loss and damage grant awarded by the Loss and Damage Youth Grant Making Cycle through the support of the Open Society Foundations  and the Climate Justice Resilience Fund. 

Cause of the Loss and Damage

The devastating landslides on Mount Hanang, triggered by heavy rainfall on December 2-3, 2023, wreaked havoc on Katesh and Gendabi villages, claiming 89 lives, destroying countless homes, and leaving many families homeless

Overview of the Project Addressing Loss and Damage in the Community

EmpowerHer Tomorrow is spearheading a resilient housing reconstruction project for seven widows in Tanzania’s Hanang District, following the devastating landslides of December 2-3, 2023. The initiative focuses on rebuilding climate-resilient homes in Katesh and Gendabi villages, featuring raised foundations, reinforced walls, and access to clean water and sanitation to withstand future extreme weather events. The project involves a detailed needs assessment, collaboration with local authorities and experts, and training on disaster preparedness and sustainable living practices. By equipping widows and their families with the tools to adapt to climate challenges, this initiative ensures safety, well-being, and a pathway to long-term recovery

The first grant cycle launched on the 22nd of September 2022. Over 200 organizations applied and before 2023 11 organizations were support with the sum of $150,000

The Second cycle announce at COP28 in Dubai launched on the 1st of February 2024 and the winners of the “$275,000” grant were announced at the SBs in Bonn
