Cause of the Loss and Damage

In December 2023, Hanang District in Manyara Region experienced severe floods and landslides caused by heavy El Niño-induced rains. Torrential rainfall led to mudslides, carrying stones and trees from the Hanang Mountains, which buried people and caused widespread destruction across the wards of Ganana, Gendabi, Jorodom, and Katesh. The disaster resulted in 89 deaths, 139 injuries, and the destruction of 6,202 households and 1,074 latrines, leaving thousands of families homeless. Despite government plans to rebuild 112 houses, the majority of affected families remain without shelter or basic necessities

Overview of the Project Addressing Loss and Damage in the Community

Climate Hub Tanzania proposes the implementation of the Post-Disaster Restoration and Recovery Project in Hanang District, Manyara Region, targeting the wards of Ganana, Gendabi, Jorodom, and Katesh. This initiative aims to address the devastating impacts of the landslide disaster that occurred on 3 December 2023, triggered by heavy El Niño-induced rainfall that caused floods and landslides from the Hanang Mountains. To mitigate this crisis, Climate Hub Tanzania intends to contribute to the recovery efforts by reconstructing 6 houses and 20 latrines to restore basic living conditions for affected families. The project will engage local communities, who will provide manpower during reconstruction, fostering collective resilience and ownership.
